Hail Damage

What the work involves.

North Texas sits in one of the most hail-prone stretches of the country, and spring storms that build over the plains to the west often reach full strength by the time they cross Dallas County and head for Lake Ray Hubbard. A single storm can leave one street untouched and the next one with a roof that needs replacing, which is why the question after a hailstorm is never whether hail fell in Rockwall but whether it damaged your roof.

Hail damage is not always visible from the ground and it does not always leak straight away. A hit on an asphalt shingle knocks the granules off and bruises the fiberglass mat underneath. The shingle keeps shedding water for a while, but the exposed spot breaks down in the sun and the mat cracks, and months later a roof that looked fine starts to leak. By then the storm that caused it may be past the window your policy allows for a claim.

The Difference

The parts you do not see.

That is why a hail inspection documents rather than guesses. Each slope gets checked and hits are counted, often inside a chalked test square, because adjusters look at damage slope by slope and a roof can qualify on some sides and not others. Soft metals tell the story too. Dents on vents, drip edge, gutters and downspouts show how large the hail was and which direction it came from. Skylights, which can crack or have their seals broken, get checked along with everything else on the roof.

We work directly with your insurance company once there is damage worth a claim. That means meeting the adjuster at the house, walking the roof with the photos and the test squares, and going over the scope the carrier approves so nothing that was damaged gets left off. Items that are often missed in a first estimate include drip edge, pipe boots, vents, ridge cap, gutters and the underlayment that has to be replaced with the shingles.

When hail has damaged most of a slope or the whole roof, the fix is replacement, and the claim normally covers it less your deductible. When the damage is limited to a few spots, soft metals or a skylight, a repair may be the right answer. Either way the work is done to the scope and to current installation standards, and Texas law requires that you pay your own deductible, so any contractor who offers to waive or cover it is breaking the law and putting your claim at risk.

After a hailstorm, write down the date, take photos of any hail you can find and of dents on cars, mailboxes or patio furniture, and look for granules collecting at the bottom of your downspouts. Then book the free inspection. We are available seven days a week, and the sooner after the storm the roof is documented, the simpler the claim tends to be.

If hail broke a skylight or opened a leak, keep the water contained inside and tell us when you call, so the leak is looked at first.

Before You Call

Hail Damage, answered.

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?

From the ground you often cannot. Look for dented gutters, vents and downspouts and for granules at the bottom of the downspouts, then have the roof inspected. Bruised shingles are found on the roof itself.

Does hail damage have to leak to be covered?

No. Bruised shingles are damage whether or not they leak yet. What matters is that the damage came from a covered storm and the claim is filed within your policy’s time limit.

Can you replace just the damaged part?

Sometimes. If damage is limited to a few spots or soft metals, a repair may be right. When most of a slope is bruised, replacing the slope or the roof is the fix that lasts.

Can a roofer pay my deductible?

No. Texas law makes the homeowner responsible for the deductible, and a contractor who offers to waive or absorb it is breaking that law.

Will you meet my insurance adjuster?

Yes. We meet the adjuster at the house and go over the damage with them so the approved scope reflects what the storm did.
