Gutters

What the work involves.

Gutters are half the name of the company, and they do more for a house than most people give them credit for. A roof collects every drop that lands on it and sends it to the eaves. Without a working gutter that water pours off the edge in sheets, splashes mud up the brick, cuts trenches in the beds and soaks the soil right against the slab. Our gutter installation is designed to handle heavy rainfall and keep water away from your foundation.

The foundation part matters more here than in most of the country. The soil across Rockwall County is heavy clay, and clay swells when it gets wet and shrinks when it dries. A slab that sits in soil soaked on one side and dry on the other moves unevenly, and that movement is what shows up later as cracked brick, sticking doors and diagonal cracks over windows. Getting roof water out and away from the house is one of the cheapest ways to keep that soil even.

The Difference

The parts you do not see.

Most homes in this area are fitted with seamless aluminum K-style gutters, formed on site from a coil so each run is one piece with no joints to leak along its length. Five-inch gutters are the common size, and six-inch gutters carry roughly forty percent more water, which is worth it on large or steep roofs and on long runs where a lot of roof drains to one corner. Downspouts get the same thinking: a three-by-four downspout moves much more water than a two-by-three, and more downspouts on a long run keep the gutter from overflowing in a hard storm.

Replacement starts with taking the old gutters down. Sagging runs, gutters pulling away from the fascia, joints that drip, rust on steel gutters and water running behind the gutter instead of into it are all signs that the system has had it. With the old gutters off, the fascia board gets checked, because water that has been running behind a gutter for years rots the wood it was nailed to, and a new gutter needs a sound board to hang on.

A new run is hung with hidden hangers spaced close enough to carry the weight of a full gutter, and pitched slightly toward each downspout so water does not sit. Corners are sealed, end caps are sealed, and downspouts get extensions or are turned so the water lands well clear of the slab rather than at its edge.

Price depends mostly on how many linear feet the house needs, the gutter size, the number of downspouts and corners, and whether it is one story or two. As a general market range, seamless aluminum gutters in North Texas run somewhere around $8 to $15 a linear foot installed. After a hailstorm, dented gutters and downspouts are often part of the same insurance claim as the roof, so they are always checked during the roof inspection.

If your roof is being replaced, it is a good time to decide about gutters too. Drip edge and gutters work together at the eave, and doing both at once avoids pulling a new gutter down later to fix an edge detail.

Before You Call

Gutters, answered.

Do I need five-inch or six-inch gutters?

Five-inch gutters suit many single-story homes. Six-inch gutters carry about forty percent more and are worth it on large, steep or two-story roofs, or where a lot of roof drains to one corner.

How much do new gutters cost?

Seamless aluminum gutters in North Texas typically run about $8 to $15 per linear foot installed, depending on size, downspouts, corners and height. You get your price after we measure the house.

Can you replace my old gutters?

Yes. The old gutters come down, the fascia behind them gets checked, and the new system is hung and routed so water ends up away from the house.

Will insurance cover gutters damaged by hail?

Dented gutters and downspouts from a covered storm are often included in the roof claim. We look at them when we inspect the roof.

Why does it matter where the downspouts drain?

North Texas clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Water dumped at the slab keeps one side of the house wetter than the other, and uneven soil is what moves foundations.
