Insurance Claims

What the work involves.

A roof claim is the part of a storm most homeowners dread more than the roof itself. The policy is written in language nobody reads until they need it, the adjuster has a schedule of their own, and the first estimate that comes back is often a number without much explanation. We work directly with your insurance to make the process smooth, so you are not stuck in the middle passing messages back and forth.

It starts with the free inspection, before anyone calls the carrier. That order matters. A claim filed on a roof with no covered damage still goes on your record, while an inspection first tells you whether hail or wind actually damaged the roof and whether the damage is likely to be enough to be worth a claim once your deductible is taken off.

The Difference

The parts you do not see.

When there is a claim to make, you file it with your carrier, since the policy is yours. From there we mark and document the damage on each slope, and we meet the adjuster at the house when they come to inspect. Walking the roof together is the simplest way to make sure the damage that is there gets seen, slope by slope, and that the soft metals, gutters, skylights and other items the storm hit end up in the scope.

Once the carrier approves the claim, you receive a scope and a payment breakdown. Most policies pay in two parts on a replacement: an initial payment for the actual cash value of the roof, and a second payment for the depreciation that is held back until the work is finished. We go through the approved scope with you line by line, and if something the storm damaged has been left off, it is raised with the carrier with the documentation to support it.

Your deductible is yours to pay. Texas law requires it, and it is illegal for a contractor to waive, rebate or absorb a homeowner’s deductible. If someone offers you that, the offer puts your claim at risk, and it is a good reason to find a different roofer.

Some things a claim does not cover. Normal wear and tear, age, and damage from a lack of maintenance are excluded from nearly every homeowners policy, and older roofs on some policies are covered only at actual cash value. It is worth reading the roof section of your policy, or asking your agent, so the payout does not come as a surprise.

A claim usually takes a few weeks from the first call to the finished roof, depending on how quickly the adjuster can come out and how busy the season is after a large storm. We are available seven days a week to answer questions along the way.

Before You Call

Insurance Claims, answered.

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

Get the free inspection first. It tells you whether there is covered storm damage before a claim goes on your record.

Do you work with my insurance company?

Yes. We work directly with your insurance company on storm claims, including meeting the adjuster at the house and reviewing the approved scope with you.

Why did my insurance company only pay part of the claim?

Many policies pay actual cash value first and release the recoverable depreciation after the work is finished. Some older roofs are covered at actual cash value only. Your scope shows which applies.

Can you waive my deductible?

No. Texas law requires the homeowner to pay the deductible, and waiving or absorbing it is illegal for a contractor.

Will filing a claim raise my premium?

A single storm claim is generally treated as an act of nature rather than a sign of risk from the homeowner, but carriers differ. Your agent can tell you how yours handles it.
